3-Day Intensive Organic Soil Management
Who: Heide Hermary
When: January 30 - February 1, 2009; 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Where: Canada Way Education Center, 5310 Woodsworth St., Burnaby, B.C.
Cost: $549.00
Contact: Karen Flynn, Burnaby Continuing Education; (604) 664-8509; Karen.Flynn@sd41.bc.ca; http://www.burnabyce.com/; http://www.gaiacollege.ca/soil
Soil is the foundation of landscape health. Whether you grow ornamental gardens, turf or vegetables, you need to understand how soil works. In the past we have looked at soil primarily as a "growing medium" - something lifeless and sterile. But soil is the exact opposite - it's an ecosystem, and needs to be managed as such. The greatest biodiversity on earth occurs - or should occur - in the top few inches of soil. Soil ecosystem health and plant, animal and human health are inseparably linked.
Soil processes are universal, applying equally to ornamental landscapes, turf and agricultural crops. Our job is primarily one of fine-tuning.
In this three-day intensive, professional workshop you will learn how to assess the health of your soil, and support the natural processes within the soil that result in plant health. You will also gain a deeper understanding of organic horticulture, and how you can integrate organic practices into your own.

1-Day Intensive Organic Turf Management

Where: Canada Way Education Center, 5310 Woodsworth St., Burnaby, B.C.

The landscape industry is undergoing rapid change as it responds to a growing demand for organic practices. Increasing public awareness of the hazards associated with the use of pesticides and other landscape toxins is creating a growing demand for professionals with knowledge of organic horticulture, in both private and public sectors. The major question on the minds of most professionals - and many home gardeners - is how to enjoy great looking lawns without the use of toxic chemicals. No other plants get trampled on the way turf does, yet we still expect our lawns, parks, playing fields and golf courses to be lush and green.
In this very intensive 1-day workshop you will learn to create and maintain healthy, beautiful, organic lawns; understand the process of transitioning a landscape from chemical dependency to organic self-sufficiency; and gain a deeper understanding of organic horticulture in general.
Topics include:Interdependence within ecosystems; Soil ecology, biology and chemistry; Soil fertility management; Underlying causes of plant & landscape health problems; Pesticides and their effect on ecosystems; Turf physiology & cultural requirements; Maintenance practices for optimal turf health; Managing turf problems; Preventing turf problems at the design and installation stage.
